Legal apprentices join Kennedys and Browne Jacobson

updated on 18 September 2012

Both Kennedys and Browne Jacobson have recently welcomed their first batch of legal apprentices, reflecting a trend that is fast gathering momentum.

Kennedys' first ever apprenticeship scheme will see 10 A-level school leavers join the firm at the end of September, working as legal administrators for a year. There is then the chance for them to take part in a two-year, "advanced" apprenticeship scheme. The scheme is run in partnership with Damar Training and ILEX Tutorial College and is, according to the firm, "further evidence of how progressive law firms are broadening their approach to legal recruitment, recognising that some of the best potential lawyers of the future can be recruited on leaving school".

Christopher Helme, from Derbyshire, is an apprentice at Kennedys' Sheffield office. He says: "I was attracted to Kennedys because they are a top law firm offering a real alternative to the university route which, after the increase in tuition fees, could result in a debt of £50,000 or more. With an apprenticeship, I have the opportunity to acquire practical skills and real work experience alongside qualifications."

Browne Jacobson's six new apprentices started at the firm on 10 September. It announced the new initiative in July, which allows school leavers to work and gain experience, while also acquiring industry recognised qualifications. The scheme is run in conjunction with Vision West Nottinghamshire College and ILEX Tutorial College. Sally Swift, legal services manager at Browne Jacobson, says: "Our apprentices have just joined us and they have a great energy about them. It is fantastic to be able to offer such opportunities here."
