The Law Society has confirmed that it will be running the Diversity Access Scheme for the 2014-15 academic year, which provides financial assistance to outstanding LPC students.
The fund seeks to help exceptional students overcome social, educational, financial or personal obstacles to qualification. Successful applicants are also provided with the opportunity to be matched with a professional mentor and secure work experience. The programme has helped over 140 students to date, but competition for places is intense; in 2013, more than 100 applications were received and 15 awards were granted.
A recipient of the 2013 award commented: "'The Diversity Access Scheme has provided me with funding that I would never have been able to access elsewhere. It has helped to remove the barriers caused by my disability that were preventing me from moving forward with my chosen career in the law. It demonstrates the support that the Law Society offers for people from different backgrounds."
Applications for the scheme will open on 10 February 2014, when the form will be available to download from the Junior Lawyers Division website. Candidates must submit their application in advance of the deadline of midday on Friday 28 March 2014.
