ABS round-up: what’s the latest?

updated on 23 April 2013

The world of alternative business structures (ABS) continues to buzz with new licences granted and discussion on regulation. Here's a few of the most recent ABS developments:

  • Solicitor Rebecca Hudson and barrister Anthony Galvin have joined forces to form an ABS that will service construction sector clients. Altion Law Limited has ambitions to employ a range of professionals associated with the building industry.
  • Insurer Admiral Group has announced two joint venture ABS with firms Lyons Davidson and Cordner Lewis - Admiral Law with the former and Elephant Law with the latter.
  • The Legal Services Board (LSB) has vowed to keep the way the SRA issues ABS licences under scrutiny, issuing a notice under the Legal Services Act 2007 requiring the SRA to provide information about the backlog in applications and its plan to address the problem.
  • The Scottish government has announced that ABS (or 'licensed legal services providers' as ABS will be known in Scotland) will not be introduced until the end of 2013 at the earliest. It wants more time to review the Law Society of Scotland's application to be the only approved regulator.
