The University of Law (ULaw) has announced the relocation of its Yorkshire training centre from York to Leeds.
The new centre will open in September. The relocation is expected to allow ULaw to make a broader range of courses more accessible to students, while its central location in the city will make it a more viable staff training option for firms in the North East.
John Latham, ULaw’s provost and CEO, said: "Leeds has much to offer students, being the third largest metropolitan area in England. Our new location in the heart of the city will provide even more opportunities for aspiring young lawyers and enable law firms across the North East to access high calibre law students and the highest quality legal training for their staff. As the [United Kingdom’s] longest-established specialist provider of legal education and training, we are keen to support the continued growth of Leeds’ thriving legal community and contribute to the future economic success of the wider region."
Meanwhile in other news, ULaw is introducing three new full-fee scholarships, each named after one of its most distinguished alumni; Fiona Woolfe CBE, lord mayor of London and ULaw’s chancellor designate, Nic Coward, the Barclays Premier League’s general secretary, and John Pickering, Irwin Mitchell’s group chief executive.
Reacting to having a scholarship named after her, Woolfe said: "I’m really thrilled about the scholarship scheme and being part of it because we want to attract the best and the brightest people into law, whatever their background. As a woman, I am very keen on capturing the benefits of diversity and including everybody in the law. It’s something I have worked on for years and it’s extremely close to my heart. I’m delighted that The University of Law is doing this."
