Trillion-dollar tech, Capita, Ryanair, UK manufacturing: your commercial news round-up

While you may be breathing a sigh of relief that the biggest vacation scheme deadline of the year has now passed, there is no time to rest on your laurels when it comes to improving your commercial awareness – if you get invited to interview, you need to have a few aces up your sleeve. The best place to start is by keeping an eye on the big business stories of the day – a task that we are only too happy to help with:
- Analysts are agreed that 2018 will bring with it the first-ever valuation of a tech company at over $1 trillion – but which one will it be? Apple, Amazon and Google (sorry, Alphabet) are all in the running. Watch this trillion-dollar space!
- Another week, another tale of a gigantic outsourcing company in trouble – two weeks ago it was Carillion, this week it’s Capita. The company has issued a profit warning, which resulted in £1 billion being knocked off its value through falling shares (down by 47.5%) and much concern about who will fulfil its contracts if it falls over completely.
- Ryanair has agreed that the British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) union will now represent all its British pilots in talks. A real turnaround, given that the airline’s CEO famously once said that he would rather “cut off his own hands than recognise a union”. The airline has also vowed to become “plastic-free” in the next five years.
- The growth of British manufacturing has slowed down since the beginning of the year, as cost pressures start to bite.
