Kaim Todner, an eminent London criminal defence firm, is to close this month.

The firm, which is part of the 37-strong Big Firms Group which handle 25% of criminal legal aid cases work nationwide, will close its two London offices after 25 years of tireless criminal defence work. As the Law Society Gazette reports, one of Kaim Todner’s most famous cases was its decade-long fight against the extradition of ‘Pentagon hacker’ Gary McKinnon to the United States, where despite being autistic and suffering from mental illness, McKinnon would have faced 60 years in prison. The case ended in victory for McKinnon and Kaim Todner in 2012.

More recently the firm was among those to challenge the government’s legal aid contract provision, which had forced many other firms to merge or close down altogether before being scrapped by justice secretary Michael Gove last month.

Karen Todner, one of the firm’s founders and its long-serving managing director, has remained upbeat. She tweeted: “Clients and solicitors placed and cared for. New ventures ahead.”
