Ten students from Notre Dame sixth form college in Leeds have spent a week’s work experience with Walker Morris, which concluded with a mock trial run in conjunction with 11 South Square.
Students had the opportunity to spend time at the firm as a result of its work with PRIME, which is designed to boost social mobility in the legal profession through the provision of work experience. On the final day, participants were given time to prepare for the mock trial, with help from Walker Morris lawyers; the fictitious case involved an intellectual property (IP) claim with complex passing off and commercial issues. Assuming the roles of lawyers and barristers, the students had to present their arguments to practising barrister, Chris Hall from 11 South Square. Hall praised the work of those involved: "It was an extremely challenging task and the students were under immense pressure. They rose to the challenge, presented their cases with clarity and enthusiasm, and carried out some skilful (and at times fierce!) cross-examination."
Samantha Lucas, IP associate at Walker Morris, said: "This is the third year we have run the scheme and we are always impressed by how well and enthusiastically the students engage with the opportunity. It’s an intensive week which provides invaluable experience in legal departments, as well as gaining advice on different entry routes into the profession."
