Study suggests SQE could be good for diversity

An independent study looking at the SRA’s proposed Solicitors Qualification Examination (SQE) has determined that its introduction could lead to both improved diversity and increased social mobility. The report, published by Bridge Group, states: “The proposals are highly likely to increase the number, and broaden the range, of training providers in the market, and provoke new models of training, including online provision.”
The report also emphasises that having a wider range of options should allow students to choose more flexible routes into the profession, especially if - as it expects - competition among providers will drive down the cost of training and “potentially lower this financial barrier for trainees.”
It does also emphasise that the SQE will not be a magic bullet: “Reforming qualification can be a step in the right direction, but it is not a panacea to address all diversity concerns; continued effort is required.” The report also stresses the importance of making information available to would-be solicitors and the SRA’s obligation to ensure “greater transparency of data”.
Clarification on the SQE is expected from the SRA later this Spring.
