The solicitor who accidentally revealed the pseudonym of Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been fined £1,000 by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for breaking confidentiality rules.
Rowling published a crime novel entitled The Cuckoo's Calling under the pseudonym 'Robert Galbraith'. The author’s real name was later revealed to the public through Christopher Gossage, a partner at Russells Solicitors, the firm of which Rowling was a client. Gossage privately told his wife’s best friend that the author of The Cuckoo's Calling was in fact she who must not be named, but this information became known to the Sunday Times, which went on to break the story. The novel went on to be the week's best seller on Amazon following this particularly golden snitch.
Russells Solicitors has apologised for the affair, while Gossage has also received a written rebuke from the SRA.
