The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has announced the appointment of Paul Phillip, currently deputy chief executive of the General Medical Council (GMC), as its new chief executive.

Philip will begin his new role at the SRA on 1 February 2014, as he takes over from Antony Townsend. Prior to working for the GMC, Philip held roles at the Legal Services Commission and the NHS. He holds both an undergraduate and masters in law, in addition to being called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn. On the publication of his appointment, Phillip said: "I am delighted to be joining the SRA at this key time and look forward to building on the considerable strengths and achievements of the organisation to date."

SRA chairman Charles Plant commented that "Paul has a wealth of experience in public interest regulation relating to the provision of professional services, which will be brought to bear on the opportunities and challenges facing the SRA as it moves to the next stage in our development. We are fortunate to have secured his services."
