Reed Smith recently ran a competition asking students from four universities to submit a video on what they thought the law firm of the future would look like. Students from Queen Mary University produced the winning video, which saw them awarded a trip to New York and work experience in the firm's London office.
The video competition was open to students from King's College London, London School of Economics, Queen Mary and University College London. Lucy Crittenden, graduate recruitment manager at Reed Smith, explains that they were looking for "fresh and creative thinking … from the next generation of lawyers, who are unfettered by previous experience". She went on to say that the entire grad rec team were extremely impressed with all four entries: "We had big smiles on our faces. The videos were creative, thoughtful and really showed that the students had put a lot of time and effort in to them. All of the videos are a credit to the students involved and they gave us some interesting things to think about."
Lucy points out that getting involved with competitions such as this allows students to develop the sort of skills (eg, teamwork, time management and commerciality) which recruiters are looking for. She says: "This competition has provided the students with an invaluable insight into our firm, which we hope will help them to make decisions as to where they might want to apply. Taking part in a competition can also allow a student to make an impact on the firm running the competition, as well as resulting in a great prize such as work experience or even a trip."
All four video entries can be found on the firm's site here.
