Oxford Brookes decides to terminate LPC

updated on 08 March 2013

Oxford Brookes University announced earlier this week that it intends to stop offering the LPC in summer this year. The university cites "a steady decline in applications over the past five years" as the main reason that the course "is no longer tenable".

The university is in discussion with the SRA to determine what happens to those who will not have completed the course when it stops operating - ie, those who are one year into the two-year part-time course.

Students have published an open letter to key figures at the university - ie, Meryll Dean, head of the law school, Anne-Marie Kilday, dean of the law faculty and Janet Beer, vice-chancellor. The letter speaks of the excellent quality of the course, and the negative effect its withdrawal will have, not just on those who are only part-way through, but also on the university’s mooting and pro bono schemes. The general feeling is summed up here: "This decision to discontinue an outstanding course at such abrupt notice is thus not only saddening, but irresponsible."

A Facebook group has also been set up, where many students are venting their anger and frustration about the situation.
