Law and business news round-up: Trump, Birds Eye, HSBC, toys, AstraZeneca

Well. Here we all are. Donald Trump is America’s president-elect and much of the world is reeling as it works out what that’s going to mean politically, environmentally, socially and economically. In the immediate aftermath of Tuesday’s election, the result had a destabilising effect on markets. Things have calmed down since then, but the world is watching. In light of the upsetting enormity of the Trump triumph, here are some other business stories that you might want to distract yourself with:
- Birds Eye and Walkers, joining Unilever and its many brands, have asked supermarkets to raise prices by up to 12% to mitigate against a weakened pound caused by the Brexit vote.
- HSBC has urged the government to clarify the position of EU workers in the United Kingdom; the bank has around 2,000 EU employees.
- Despite economic uncertainty related to Brexit, toy sales in the United Kingdom will top £3.3 billion this year, with around £1 billion of that being spent on Christmas presents.
- AstraZeneca has posted weak quarterly profits, down 29%, but the expectation is that big pharma is one of the sectors that is likely to benefit from the Trump presidency.
