Law and business news round-up: Olympics, interest rates, Airbus, Hinkley Point

As we are all now in thrall to the displays of Olympic athleticism, it is clear why there is a strong commercial imperative for companies to sponsor the Games – but what of those that try to “bandwagon”? For other, non-sporting commercial news, read on for this small selection from the past week:
- Good for mortgages, bad for savings: the Bank of England announced that it was dropping interest rates to 0.25% – a record low – and has warned that it could go even lower.
- The Serious Fraud Office has launched an investigation into the civil aviation business of Airbus, amid allegations of “fraud, bribery and corruption” that relate to the use of third-party consultants.
- High street retail sales figures jumped up in July, thanks in part to warmer weather and some heavy discounting.
- The Chinese company with a one-third stake in the ill-fated Hinkley Point project is facing investigation by the US government into allegations of nuclear espionage.
