Commerciality and business nous: these are prized skills among lawyers and exactly the kind of thing that firms want their trainees to possess (or at least demonstrate the potential to develop). Start working on this part of your brain by reading this week’s collection of economic and business news:
- After much toing and froing, the Hinkley Point nuclear power station has got the final go-ahead, with all relevant governments giving authorisation.
- Tesco faces something of a shareholder revolt as 60 of them launch a claim for £150 million to recoup losses due to accounting irregularities. But it’s not all bad news for the massive supermarket – it announced yesterday that it will hit its full-year profit target and shares leapt up by 10%.
- There have been mixed fortunes in terms of the fallout from Theresa May’s Article 50 announcement – the pound hit a 31-year low against the dollar, while the construction industry is going strong.
- Enjoying a rise in share price, Samsung may be revamping its approach, as its “activist investor” proposes some significant restructuring.
