Law and business news round-up: Boeing, BT, John Lewis, big tobacco

Thursday’s here again, and although the LCN team is mostly spending all its energy prepping for – and getting excited about – NationalLawLIVE tomorrow and CityLawLIVE next week, there’s still time to devote to learning what the big business stories of the past week were. Read on for our selection:
- The World Trade Organisation has ruled that Boeing has benefitted from billions-of-pounds-worth of illegal subsidies over the years, considered to be “the most serious form of anti-competitive practice”.
- In other anti-competitive new, Telecoms regulator Ofcom has ordered BT to split from its broadband division, OpenReach. The regulator has concerns about BT’s “ability to favour its retail business when making investment decisions in Openreach”.
- John Lewis enjoyed record sales of nearly £200 million over the Black Friday weekend, at one point experiencing five orders per second.
- The big tobacco companies are refusing to go down without a fight: they are planning to appeal to the Supreme Court in response to the latest ruling that they must adhere to plain packaging rules.
