Law and business: commercial news round-up 23.01.15

This week, the world’s business leaders, politicians and campaigners gathered in the Swiss ski resort of Davos for the annual World Economic Forum. There was much to discuss, including all the big things – climate change, pandemics and inequality, to name but a few. While they’ve been getting to the bottom of all of those, there has plenty of other news of note:
- Oxfam released a report which revealed that by next year, 1% of the world’s population will hold more wealth than the remaining 99% combined. The BBC’s Robert Peston looked at what that level of extreme inequality means for the very rich (not all good news, apparently).
- In another of its excellent “The Economist explains” pieces, the publication helpfully decodes why the Swiss took the decision to unpeg the Franc from the Euro.
- Consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckisser was fined this week by the Financial Conduct Authority for failing to disclose share dealing by two of its senior execs.
- Rihanna won an important case in the Court of Appeal against Topshop, concerned with image rights and whether her face could be used on a t-shirt without permission. Short answer? No.
- The European Central Bank announced that it would be injecting around £1 trillion into the Eurozone by way of government bonds, in an example of quantitative easing (QE). On which point….
- … the Telegraph produced an easy-to-follow video about what exactly QE is. Useful.
