Cameron and Carney were full of literary flourish this week, with metaphors that drew parallels with dashboards and apple barrels. To make sense of these commercial tales, and more (of a less poetic nature), read on:
- Hold on to your hats: David Cameron was warning at the recent G20 meeting in Brisbane that there was a second global crisis looming, and that the "red warning lights are flashing on the dashboard of the global economy".
- And for more creative metaphor making, Bank of England head Mark Carney has hit out at bankers and the fact that a succession of scandals "means it is simply untenable now to argue that the problem is one of a few bad apples; the issue is with the barrels in which they are stored".
- Proving that prospecting for shale gas is not going away as a concept any time soon, chemicals giant Ineos has announced its plan to invest £640 million in extracting it.
- In a pre-Christmas splurge, retail spending across the board was decidedly up in October – 4.3% higher than in October 2013. Commentators suggest that people had more disposable income because of falling petrol prices.
- In something of a blow to George Osborne, a senior EU lawyer has rejected a claim by the British government that an EU law capping bankers’ bonuses is illegal.
