Commerciality and business nous: these are prized skills among lawyers and exactly the kind of thing that recruiters are looking for their trainees to possess (or at least demonstrate the potential to develop). Start working on this part of your brain by reading this week’s collection of economic and business news:
- A report has revealed that directors at the United Kingdom’s top 100 companies earn 120 times the average wage - ie, a director typically earns £2.43 million a year, compared to the average annual salary of £27,000.
- George Osborne has announced that the government plans to sell its 40% stake in Eurostar before the 2015 election, hoping to raise up to £300 million.
- The rate of inflation is at its lowest level - 1.2% - for five years. Lower energy and food prices, as well as cheaper transport costs, are part of the reason.
- Ireland has removed its well-known tax loophole, the "double Irish"; the move is expected to be mirrored here in the United Kingdom.
- Rolls Royce has issued a profit warning, causing share prices to fall by 8%
- "Agony and ecstasy": the vicissitudes of the UK economy have prompted the Bank of England’s chief economist to admit that he is "gloomier" about prospects than he was a few months ago.
