Law and business: commercial news round-up 16.01.15

In advance of what is apparently the most depressing Monday of the entire year (third week in January, well known for its gloom-inducing properties) here’s some hard-nosed commercial news to take your mind off the fact that you’re broke and cold:
- As crude oil prices continued to fall to their lowest level since April 2009 (under £50 a barrel), motorists had cause to be pleased, as one UK garage dropped petrol prices to below £1 and the Guardian offered a number of other reasons why the everyday consumer may benefit.
- Speaking of falling, the UK’s inflation rate fell to 0.5% in December 2014 – its lowest point since May 2000 (again, linked to oil prices).
- The land of the supermarket company is a troubled one at the moment, with more upheaval as Morrisons’ chief announced he is to leave the company.
- As news emerged that Samsung might be in talks to buy beleaguered Blackberry, its shares jumped by 30%.
- The decision by the Swiss central bank to abandon its currency peg to the Euro has caused economic shockwaves around the world, including to West Ham sponsor Alpari and skiers.
