As we refuse to mention the fact that it is Friday 13th today (you make your own luck, pal) or that it is Valentine’s Day tomorrow (an example of cynical opportunism, allowing restaurants to charge double and retailers to flog heart-shaped tat), we are left with very little to theme this intro around. So let’s cut to the chase – read these commercial news stories and improve your knowledge of the business world. Now there’s something you can rely on:
- Without doubt, the biggest news story this week has been that HSBC helped thousands of its customers around the world avoid paying tax by tucking money away in a Swiss subsidiary. And there was more, as …
- … the world reacted, politicians called for heads to roll, other politicians were implicated and the whistle-blower was put under a microscope. More developments will undoubtedly follow.
- The other dominant story has focused on whether post-election Greece will stay in the European Union or leave. Today, Angela Merkel revealed that a compromise on the terms of the Greek bailout may be possible.
- Bank of England chief, Mark Carney, revealed that UK inflation could turn negative in the spring, but that it won’t amount to deflation (as explained by the ever-helpful Robert Peston).
- Virgin Media is planning a massive expansion of its cable network, reaching into 17 million more UK homes and costing £3 billion.
