Slightly off piste, but we thought this was too good not to share. This article from the Guardian has excellent networking tips, especially for those of us not naturally inclined to forcing our way into conversations and being charming, all while balancing a plate and drink aloft. In addition, if you can talk about the big news stories of the day, you’ll definitely be at an advantage! Read on for some conversation starters:
- The sweet taste of tax avoidance may leave a sour taste in Cadbury’s mouth, as investigations begin into its Channel Islands-based tax arrangements.
- This has been a bumper year for M&A deals, with their combined value hitting an all-time high of just over £3 trillion in 2015 so far. Factors include lower interest rates, a weak Euro and focus on strategic deals to increase market share.
- With the government keen to “keep the lights on”, it is offering lucrative deals to various diesel farms in a bid to ensure that there is enough capacity in the power network for the country’s energy needs.
- Sports Direct has suffered a huge fall in share price – with £500 million wiped off its value – as revelations about its unethical working practices are made public.
- The long-running copyright “Happy Birthday” case has been settled out of court, with both parties said to be happy with the outcome (details remain confidential).
- Finally, The Economist explains why privatisation overtook nationalisation in the popularity stakes, and whether the latter may be making a comeback.
