In a week that marked International Women’s Day, the staggering lack of equality for women in terms of pay and positions of seniority was widely reported. Clearly on board for change were the senior law firm leaders that called for 40% female leadership within the next three years. For a range of other interesting business news, read on:
- Acknowledging the backlash against big corporates shirking their tax responsibilities, Facebook has committed to paying millions more in tax, as it agrees to route advertising revenue through the United Kingdom as opposed to Ireland.
- In another blow for tax-fiddling practises, the Supreme Court has ruled that bonus schemes run by UBS and Deutsche Bank are not tax exempt, leaving the banks with a bill of millions owed to HMRC.
- The director general of the British Chambers of Commerce has resigned following his declaration of support for Brexit, contrary to the organisation’s traditional role of non-partisanship.
- The controversial deal struck between Sports Direct and Rangers Football Club has now been alleged to be marred by a conflict of interest, as the “ridiculous piece of litigation” (as the judge calls it) rumbles on.
