Law and business: commercial news round-up 09.01.15

For many, the first week back after the Christmas break can be a trying time, requiring a slow and painful reintegration to the work environment. For others, it’s business as usual – and there is certainly lots of business to be considered as the new year gets underway. Let’s take a look at a few commercial stories that have been in the news so far in 2015:
- The Eurozone economy is slowing down; although technically still growing, that growth is described as "anaemic".
- However, it’s not all bad economic news. Rolls Royce had its highest ever sales in 2014, hitting a 109-year high and up 12% on 2013.
- With oil prices falling, some will benefit and some will not – the BBC explores who falls on which side of the fence. In related news…
- … the Scottish National Party’s continued bid for economic independence may be adversely affected by falling oil prices, although First Minister Nicola Sturgeon denies that it is a problem.
- Beleaguered Tesco had an awful 2014, but has plans to pull itself up, while good old M&S continues to suffer from poor clothing sales – the BBC’s Kamal Ahmed compares the fortunes of the two high street giants.
- Finally, some light reading from The Economist on why deflation is bad.
