Law Society marches with Pride, 50 years on from legalisation of homosexuality

The Law Society lead legal sector representatives in Saturday’s Pride parade in London. Marching under the banner “All are equal under the law”, those who took part were keen to spread the message of the legal profession’s support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) diversity.

Joe Egan, the new Law Society president, said: "Just 50 years ago parliament voted for the first time to legalise homosexuality in the United Kingdom. Since then, legal developments have shaped and advanced the freedoms we enjoy today. We march in celebration of the significant progress that has been achieved towards a truly diverse and inclusive society and of our progress as a sector.”

He continued: “We also march in solidarity with the global LGBT community. Events in Chechnya are a sobering reminder that there is still a great deal to do before LGBT people can live without fear everywhere. By marching together on the streets of London, we demonstrate our determination as a profession to do all we can to achieve full equality.”
