Junior lawyers are being invited to apply for a short-term scheme with the High Court of England and Wales to assist judges with family and civil court cases.
The judicial assistants (JA) scheme offers a “ringside view of the trial process and first instance decision-making from the perspective of the judge” for what are often complex and high-profile cases. It is aimed at recently qualified solicitors and barristers who are in the early stages of their career.
JAs will be placed with a judge in their chosen specialisation and will assist by carrying out research, marking up and summarising case documents and transcripts, summarising submissions, discussing cases and hearings and providing general support.
Candidates will be employed full-time for the duration of the scheme and will need to have a 2.1 degree or above, practical experience in legal research and writing, and preferably early experience of practising law. The placements will last between three and five months during the 2019 – 2020 legal year, with candidates able to choose the duration and timing of their placement.
You can find out more and apply on the Courts and Tribunals Judiciary website. Applications close on 1 July 2019.
