ITV v Virgin, AB InBev, US-EU trade, retail, Facebook+China: your commercial news round-up

We know that it’s less than a week until the big training contract deadline of the year (31 July, in case you weren’t sure) and you’re probably furiously working away on the last few applications. Don’t let us stop you! However, when your application(s) is successful, you’ll then have to turn your mind to how to impress recruiters at interview. One sure-fire way is by demonstrating some sense that commerciality is an essential skill for any lawyer. To help, cast your eye over this week’s selection of business news:
- Corrie no more? ITV and Virgin Media are at loggerheads over a variety of points, including “the carriage of ITV, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, video-on-demand rights and guarantees of the prominence of its programming”. If an agreement can’t be reached, Virgin viewers may face a life without Love Island …
- Snappily named AB InBev, global purveyor of beer, has announced profits that are lower than expected. The owner of Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona may be suffering from consumers greater knowledge of, and interest in, craft beers.
- The US and EU have agreed a deal that will work towards lowering trade barriers, in a move that has caused global markets to breath a sigh of collective relief. Juncker and Trump announced it was a “new phase” in relations.
- In more retail woe, latest figures from the British Retail Consortium indicate that one in five high street retailers are planning to cut the number of people they employ within the next three months.
- Facebook’s imminent return to the Chinese market, having been banned along with many others since 2009, seems to be under threat. The licence to set up an “innovation hub” has been withdrawn from the government website, throwing the move into doubt.
