Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has announced that it is working with Rare, the specialist diversity recruitment company, to establish a scholarship for exceptional black and minority ethnic (BAME) students.

Two successful applicants to the Excel scholarship programme will benefit from significant work experience and investment from HSF. The students will receive an award of £9,000 over three years of study, a guaranteed place on the firm’s first-year workshop and two weeks of paid work experience in the summer of their first year. In addition, the scholars will be offered an interview for the summer vacation scheme if they fulfil the first-year academic requirements.

Matthew White, HSF graduate recruitment partner in London, said: "We are excited to be launching this scholarship, which provides a high level of financial support and unique access to work experience opportunities for BAME students.” Lianne Moseley, director at Rare, added: “The Excel scholarship is a game changer for us, for our candidates and, we hope, for Herbert Smith Freehills too.”

To apply, BAME students must be Rare candidates in the first year of a three-year course or the second of a four-year course. Applications can be made through the Herbert Smith Freehills’ website, before the deadline of 31 January 2014.
