Journalist Frances Gibb has launched a new video podcast series in partnership with The University of Law which will see several former Lord Chief Justices open up about their careers at the top of the justice system.
The new series, The Judges: Power, Politics and the People, will feature interviews with the 10 most senior former judges in England and Wales from the past three decades, including former Lord Chief Justices Lord Woolf, Lord Burnett of Maldon and Baroness Hale. Each guest will offer their verdict on the politics, power shifts and prospects for the legal system.
Gibb said: “In recent years judges have been more visible to the public and accessible to the media through cameras in courts, interviews and press conferences. But relatively little is still known about the people who make many of the key decisions in framing our laws.”
As such, this series “will cast light on the men and women who act as critical power brokers in our constitution”.
Gibb, who’s a former legal editor of The Times, will host the series designed to highlight the men and women who’ve reached the pivotal positions at the top of the justice system, as well as their thoughts on their time in office, key decisions and dealings with ministers. Conversation will focus on each judge’s careers and motivations, while also addressing the changing public perceptions of the judiciary in a post-Brexit era; the challenges, high points and regrets of their time as judges; and a look towards the future of the judiciary.
The series launched on 24 October and you can watch the first episode via YouTube.
