Garden Court Chambers has launched a scholarship to enable refugee students to take the Bar Practice Course (BPC) at  City, University of London Law School.

The scholarship was introduced to honour Stephen Knafler QC, who was a member of Garden Court for 16 years, including joint head of chambers between the years 2013 and 2016. Stephen was also a co-author of the Support for Asylum-Seekers handbook in 2001.

His work at the Bar “enabled thousands of refugees and their families to settle in the UK and participate fully in society”, according to Legal Action Group.

In order to apply, the candidate must be:

  • studying, at the same time as the BPC, either their diploma, postgraduate diploma with specialism or LLM;
  • a refugee or recent migrant to the UK, or child of a migrant or refugee; and
  • in financial hardship.

Applications are now open, with plans to offer scholarships in June 2022. Successful applicants will be offered a £20,000 scholarship to cover fees plus a small maintenance bursary.

The chambers has encouraged law firms, organisations and other chambers to make a single or monthly donation on the law school’s website.
