GDPR, Carluccios, M&S, Sony + EMI, fuel prices, retail: your commercial news round-up

With one day to go until GDPR kicks in, you would be forgiven for never wanting to see that particular 4-letter acronym again. - Carluccios has confirmed its plans to close nearly one-third of its restaurants. It is not the first – and certainly not the last – restaurant chain to fall victim to “a combination of well-documented pressures including a gradual decline in consumer spending and increasing competition, coupled with the rising costs of labour, raw materials, rent and business rates”.
- And while we’re talking closures, M&S has revealed plans to close around 100 f its stores by 2022. The numbers represent one in three of its clothing and homewear branches, and will result in thousands of job losses.
- Sony has bought EMI Music Publishing for $2.3 billion. The deal will add 2.1 million songs to Sony’s existing 2.3 million, making it the largest music publishing company in the world.
- With the price of fuel hitting a three-year high, consumers are feeling the pressure and reducing their spending in other areas as a result. However, despite there being a sense that the underlying retail mood is generally “lacklustre”, figures for April were up when compared to 2017.
