Funding scheme launched by Inns of Court creates 30 pupillages

updated on 12 May 2014

The Inns of Court Pupillage Matched Funding Scheme will create 30 pupillages for aspiring barristers, with 15 pupils due to start in both 2014 and 2015.

Announced in October 2013, the scheme is intended to help chambers whose work is predominately publicly funded. Chambers apply for a grant in order to double the number of pupillages that they offer. If chambers would ordinarily offer one pupillage, they can apply for a matched fund of £6,000 to fund the first six months of a second pupillage. Sets which have not recently provided a pupillage - and would like to do so - could apply for £3,000 towards the first-six.

Speaking to The Lawyer, James Wakefield, director of the Council of the Inns of Court, commented: "We are really pleased that the scheme has been such a success for this year and we hope that it will create even more pupillages next year." Applications for a second round of funding are expected to open in 2015.
