Firms’ and lawyers’ access to justice work celebrated at LawWorks Annual Pro Bono Awards 2018

The outstanding pro bono and volunteering achievements of individual lawyers, law firms, charities and advice clinics were celebrated last week at the LawWorks Annual Pro Bono Awards.

The ceremony took place on 3 December. Award winners were chosen across 10 categories covering individuals, firms, in-house teams, law schools and students, charities, advice agencies, law centres and non-legal volunteers.

Carol Storer, the outgoing director of the Legal Aid Practitioners Group, was also presented with a special award for her outstanding contribution to access to justice – read about her work in legal aid here.

The awards were presented by Tottenham MP David Lammy. The winners were:

  • Best contribution by a small firm - Fry Law
  • Best contribution by a firm with an English head office - Irwin Mitchell
  • Best contribution by an international firm - Allen & Overy
  • Best contribution by an in-house team - Barclays Bank Plc
  • Best contribution by an individual - Gareth Keillor, Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Junior Lawyers Division pro bono award - Louise Taylor, Anthony Gold Solicitors
  • LawWorks Cymru award - Swansea Law Clinic, Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law
  • Best contribution by a pro bono clinic - Dentons PopLaw Clinic
  • Best new pro bono activity - St Hilda's East Legal Advice Clinic
  • Most effective pro bono partnership - Cardiff University Law School Pro Bono Unit Mencap WISE student advice project
  • Outstanding contribution to access to justice - Carol Storer
