Commercial news round-up: debt relief, retail sales, Glaxo, Deutsche Bank

Law fair season is upon us, and as LCN lurches from uni to uni, you should be focusing on developing your commercial awareness as a way of impressing the recruiters that you meet. A couple of well thought-out, topical questions may be the difference between success and rejection. Look no further than this selection of recent business news stories:
- The government is considering whether to implement a six-week “breathing space” for borrowers who are having trouble repaying their debts, and need an interest-free period to sort their finances out. In addition, there is a proposal to “include legal protections that would shield individuals from further creditor action once a plan to repay their debts is in place”.
- Retail sales were sharply down in September, dropping by a significant 0.8% and running counter to the upward surge that sales had enjoyed in August.
- The prospect of no deal being struck by Brexit negotiators is one of the compelling reasons that pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline is planning on building a giant drugs testing facility in Europe. The company’s CEO, Emma Walmsley, told the Guardian that drug companies needed clarity on future relations with the European Union as soon as possible to minimise disruption to medicine supplies.
- Deutsche Bank must pay an additional $220 million in relation to its involvement with the Libor scandal on top of the $2.5 billion fine that it received in 2015.
