Commercial news round-up: Reckitt Benckiser, Imagination Tech, Brexit, Tesla, shrinkflation

- Maker of Nurofen, Dettol and Durex, Reckitt Benckiser has cut its chief executive’s pay by 40% following a safety scandal in South Korea and in an effort to “shore up public confidence” in its many household products.
- Shares in Imagination Technologies went into freefall – down by 70% -when Apple announced that it would no longer be using the UK chip designer’s graphics. Apple has used the UK company’s tech for years and was one of its biggest shareholders.
- In a survey conducted by Deloitte of 130 chief financial officers of some of the UK’s largest companies, fears about the realities of Brexit are lessening, with more optimism creeping in, although the departure still remains the number one risk in their minds.
- In what has been a surprise to many commentators, electric vehicle pioneer Tesla now has a higher market value than global giant Ford – Tesla is at $49 billion compared to Ford’s $46 billion.
- Shrinkflation (ie, where food size is reduced but the price remains the same) strikes again, with news that large Dorito bags are to be reduced by 10% and boxes of Coco Pops by 80g. Whether this is due to rising food production costs or “consumer demand for healthier products”, as claimed by the companies, remains to be seen.
