Commercial news round-up: McDonald’s, Ryanair, Jaguar, Pukka, Brexit

Autumn tends to bring with it a renewed sense of vigour and the chance for a fresh start – make one of your autumn resolutions a commitment to honing your commercial awareness skills in a bid to impress future employers. Where to start? Look no further than this selection from the past week:
- McDonald’s found itself the subject of a first this week – namely, the first time that its UK workers had gone on strike. They were striking about zero-hours contracts and other working conditions, although represented only a small proportion of McDonald’s overall UK workforce.
- Ryanair has decided to cut cabin baggage allowance to just one bag (previously two) in a bid to speed up boarding times. The airline said that some passengers were abusing its “niceness” in allowing them to take two bags on board.
- Jaguar Land Rover has vowed to make only electric or hybrid vehicles from 2020, following Volvo’s lead. The decision is environmentally sound, but commentators also suggest that high-end manufacturers are having to catch up with the Tesla offering.
- In another example of a small, ethical food producer being taken over by a giant household name, organic herbal tea manufacturer Pukka has been bought by Unilever, which also owns PG Tips and Lipton. Pukka’s founding duo plan to stay on at the company to help drive global growth.
- The government is very keen to get UK businesses on board with its Brexit plans; a leaked letter asserts that now is the right time for employers to work with the government to make Brexit a success.
