On Saturday 8 December 2012 the second CityLawLIVE student conference was held in London, bringing together around 200 students keen on a career in the City with firm representatives and industry experts.
The event began with a keynote speech from Simon Beddow, managing partner of Ashurst's European corporate practice. There followed a panel discussion, chaired by Hilary O'Connor of SJ Berwin, which looked at how firms operate as businesses and the role that trainees play within those businesses.
Firm-led workshops in both the morning and afternoon covered a host of work areas, including clean energy, international M&A, private equity and IP/IT disputes. The in-house perspective was also provided by Anthony Kenny of The Boston Consulting Group. The workshops were led by the following firms and organisations: Eversheds, Baker & McKenzie, Weil, Gotshal & Manges, SJ Berwin, The College of Law, Ashurst, Skadden, Clyde & Co and Edwards Wildman.
Throughout the day, a CV surgery was running, with 15-minute individual advice slots for attendees with "application doctors" from many of the above firms, as well as from Kaplan Law School and The College of Law. The final panel of the day, entitled "Key Advice for Applicants", was chaired by LC.N's Matthew Broadbent, and also featured Danny Tricot of Skadden, Alex Hand of Eversheds, Jacqui Bernuzzi of Baker & McKenzie and Vicki Wisson of Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
