CityLawLIVE careers conference: ready for applications

updated on 01 October 2012

Following the success of CityLawLIVE's first full-day conference, applications are now being accepted for the next event, to be held on Saturday 8 December in central London. The conference is aimed at academically successful law and non-law undergraduates plus anyone taking or considering the GDL route to qualification. It is perfectly timed for students who will be applying for 2013 vacation schemes.

Anna Williams, CityLawLIVE organiser, said: "The students who attended our February conference got so much out of the day. The way they handled themselves while networking with senior City partners was fantastic and they asked some really intelligent questions during the panel discussions. Our speakers and workshop presenters were definitely impressed by how well prepared they were and I have since learned that many of them used the experience to help secure training contracts and vacation scheme places. The CityLawLIVE team is now looking forward to hosting another group of students who will benefit from the knowledge and experience of lawyers and recruiters from our sponsor firms. In February delegates came from over 52 UK and 13 overseas universities, which I hope emphasises our interest in talented students from across the country and beyond."

CityLawLIVE has announced the first group of participating firms:  Ashurst, Baker & McKenzie, SJ Berwin, Skadden and Weil Gotshal & Manges, with other names to follow. The College of Law has also partnered with CityLawLIVE as the official host of its Application Surgery. "Students told us just how helpful it was to receive one-on-one advice on their CVs so we're rolling out this opportunity to more delegates this time," Anna explained. "We're also going to provide more workshops as these allow students to learn about different aspects of commercial practice in an interactive setting."

The event aims to boost students' knowledge on issues including:

  • What is the City?
  • What do City lawyers do for their clients?
  • How are international law firms managed and structured?
  • What issues do they face in the current international business climate?
  • Who do these firms want to recruit?
  • How can you improve your chances of securing a vacation scheme or training contract?

CityLawLIVE runs a daily commercial awareness newsfeed on Twitter and Facebook, offering well-sourced commercial and legal news stories to help prepare you for your vacation scheme and training contract search.

Full details of the conference programme and how to apply for one of the 200 student delegate places are on the CitylawLIVE website at www.citylawlive.com. Anna recommends applying as early as possible as places will start to be offered ahead of the 8 November deadline.
