CPS plans in-house "advocacy hubs"

updated on 01 October 2012

The Times reports that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is planning on setting up a network of advocacy hubs, similar to a barristers' chambers, in each of its 13 CPS areas.

Each hub will have at least one QC as well as junior advocates and a clerk. There are currently just three QC advocates in the CPS, so this is expected to increase over the next few years to meet demand.

The director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, responded to criticism of the "variable quality of CPS in-house advocates" by insisting that progress was being made: "We have some of the best prosecutors in the country. I want to ensure [they] are rightly recognised for their skill and experience."
