CILEx Regulation has appointed The University of Law (ULaw) as its training and assessment provider to run its alternative route to authorising Chartered Legal Executives who want to apply for additional practice rights.
Chartered Legal Executives on the new route will be able to complete a competence assessment to obtain the right to practise one or more reserved areas of activity. Those eligible for the route will have more than five years of qualifying employment.
If successful, hopefuls will then be required to submit an application to the regulatory body for authorisation and will receive 20 credits towards qualification at Level 7.
There is also a course available via ULaw for Chartered Legal Executives wanting to change practice area, or whose experience is limited – the course will ensure that candidates are in a good position to take the assessment.
A pilot phase of the route will go ahead before the regulatory body makes an application to the Legal Services Board (LSB) to finalise the scheme – the final application is expected to be made at the start of 2022.
CEO of CILEx Regulation, Janine Griffiths-Baker, said: “We are really pleased to be working with The University of Law on this new route to enable established Chartered Legal Executives to gain practice rights. The University has an outstanding reputation for delivering high-quality courses and assessments for law and legal practice and we look forward to working with them to design, develop, and implement a rigorous assessment process which complements the existing route to authorisation for additional practice rights. The alternative route has been developed based on feedback we have received relating to the existing portfolio-based application route.”
Focusing on the expanded opportunities available, Professor Joanna Ballard, pro-vice-chancellor of academic development at ULaw, said: “We are delighted to win this tender and are looking forward to working collaboratively with CILEx Regulation to widen access to the legal profession generally. Most importantly, this is a great opportunity, as it provides an alternative route for CILEX Fellows to gain additional practice rights”.
