CILEX to deliver new T-level qualification aimed at teens

updated on 18 January 2022

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) has announced plans to work with education provider Pearson to deliver the new Legal Services T Level, aimed at 16- to 19-year-olds.

T-level students will undertake on-the-job training and classroom-based learning across two years. The qualification, which follows GCSEs and is equivalent to three A levels, is aimed at those who want to secure a business administration role in the legal sector or want to complete further study to pursue a legal career.

As well as establishing the non-university route into law, in 2021 CILEX launched the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), which is a new approach to on-the-job training that marries legal knowledge with the practical skills, behaviours and commercial awareness required by lawyers in the 2020s.

CILEX and Pearson will work together to ensure that the qualification content is current, relevant and supports the professional standards for the legal sector. Students that complete the T level will be able to progress directly onto the CPQ, which could lead to them ultimately qualifying as a CILEX lawyer. The new qualification “will link seamlessly with the CPQ, providing a practical and relevant grounding in legal skills and knowledge that will give T-level students a head start in their journey towards becoming a CILEX lawyer”, said David Cameron, CILEX’s director of education.

The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education granted CILEX and Pearson the contract to develop, create and assess the Legal Services T Level.

Linda Ford, CEO of CILEX said: “As the pioneer of the non-university route into law, it is only fitting that we partner with Pearson to deliver the new Legal Services T Level. By creating another pathway into the law for students, we will continue to drive social mobility in the profession and bring to bear our experience of providing thousands of work-ready practitioners into the legal services sector.”
