The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) has announced that 83% of students passed the latest CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) Foundation assessments.
Nearly 300 students across England and Wales sat the assessments in June, which make up the first step in the Foundation stage of the CPQ. This stage prepares students for the roles of paralegal or case handler and is the first stage for school leavers, non-law graduates and professionals with no legal experience who want to qualify as CILEX Lawyers.
Nine candidates have also completed the other assessments and practice experience requirements that form the rest of the Foundation stage – these candidates are now qualified CILEX Paralegals. For those who want to progress further, the next step is to sit the CPQ Advanced stage.
In the same report CILEX revealed that 57% of the students who sat the CPQ Advanced stage passed, meaning they are now qualified as CILEX Advanced Paralegals and are trainee CILEX Lawyers. They can now go on to study the CPQ Professional stage.
CILEX reported that there was no significant difference in performance between candidates on a range of diversity characteristics. The results show that 84% of White candidates passed compared to 75% of Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, while 73% of men passed compared to 85% of women.
Linda Ford, CILEX chief executive officer, said: “Congratulations to all those students who are receiving positive news today. Those passing assessments have been successful in the first step of their journey towards a rewarding legal career and progressing to the next stage of the CPQ. Gaining both legal knowledge and practice-based experience provides them with a competitive edge in the legal market and makes them an attractive proposition for employers.”
The CPQ assessment was launched in February 2021 with the aim of producing qualified, specialist legal professionals with the skills to meet the changing demands of the modern legal market. The CPQ echoes CILEX’s core values of accessibility, affordability and flexibility – allowing both graduates and those who did not attend university the opportunity to practise law at the highest level.
