Bar Standards Board considers arguments at debate on the future of barrister training

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has hosted another debate about the future of training to be a barrister, as part of its Future Bar Training consultation.
The debate was hosted on 7 July at BPP University Law School and attendees included barristers, students and training providers. The arguments centred on the BSB’s three proposed options for delivering training as a barrister. The BSB has not yet decided which option to pursue and is listening to arguments before publishing its full consultation later in 2016, but it is agreed that training as a barrister needs to become more flexible and accessible to a more diverse range of candidates.
Dr Vanessa Davies, the BSB’s director general and host of the debate, said: “The issues generated by this discussion are complex and also very important. The views that we have listened to this evening are of real value to us, and we will make sure that they are appropriately reflected in our upcoming consultation paper.”
