The Bar Council has confirmed that the Bar Placement Week, launched seven years ago in London, has been introduced in Leeds and Manchester for the first time. The new scheme is organised in partnership with the Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Law programmes at the Universities of Manchester and Leeds.
Running this week (17-21 February), a total of 24 students are participating in various activities, including shadowing barristers from local chambers and attending court. Participants will also write an account of their work experience, with prizes awarded for the most interesting and entertaining essays. Further details on the cities' inaugural Bar Placement Week can be found on the Bar Council website.
Nicholas Lavender QC, chairman of the Bar, said: "The Bar Placement Week is an excellent opportunity for high-achieving students to gain new skills and learn first-hand what it takes to be a barrister. We hope that the week will be a challenging and rewarding experience, and that it will go some way to inspiring a new generation of practitioners."
