BPP founder and CEO Carl Lygo leaves; takes role at ACL Training

One of the most well-known figures in UK legal postgraduate education, Carl Lygo has announced that he is to relinquish his role as CEO of BPP Holdings and vice chancellor of BPP University.
A qualified barrister, Lygo taught law at Leeds University, Leeds Metropolitan University, City University and London Guildhall University. He joined BPP Law School in 1996 and it was under his leadership that BPP became the first private sector institution to obtain degree-awarding powers, when it achieved full university status in 2013. He said: “It has been an amazing 20 years at BPP, working my way up from tutor to CEO, and becoming the first vice chancellor. I leave BPP in strong leadership under Professor Tim Stewart. I will now focus the next part of my career on charitable and community work.”
Lygo has been appointed non-executive chair of ACL Training (ACLT), the Association of Costs Lawyers’ independent training arm. Francis Kendall, ACL’s vice-chair, said: “Carl has an excellent reputation in the field of legal education and training and has had great success in turning BPP Law School into one of the country’s top legal education institutions. ACLT will benefit from his huge academic and commercial expertise.”
