BPP Law School Manchester wins 2014 DAC Beachcroft mooting shield

updated on 09 April 2014

A team from BPP Law School Manchester has won the fifth mooting shield competition hosted by DAC Beachcroft, following six months of preliminary rounds.

The grand final was held at Sovereign Chambers in Leeds last week, with teams from BPP Law School Manchester and Leeds Metropolitan University competing against each other. The moot was in fact a rematch of their opening practice round in the competition, with the BPP team replicating their initial win. Jasmine Chan and Ryan Hall, both BPTC students at BPP Manchester, were presented with the DAC Beachcroft shield, as well as the opportunity to spend a valuable week of work experience with the firm. The final was judged by Andrew Lewis QC (head of Sovereign Chambers), Virginia Clegg and Andrew Marsh (partners at DAC Beachcroft).

The firm launched the mooting competition in 2009, with the aim of helping law students across Yorkshire, Manchester and the Northeast break into the legal profession. The cases are based on the practice areas in which DAC Beachcroft specialises, with senior lawyers at the firms devising the scenarios. Virginia Clegg, partner at the firm and judge of the competition, praised the talent demonstrated throughout the mooting competition: "The team from Manchester BPP Law School won four moots to reach the final and all of the finalists demonstrated the commitment, legal analysis and communication skills that will stand them in excellent stead for their legal careers as solicitors or barristers."
