Argent Chambers has merged with Goldsmith Chambers as of yesterday (6 May).
The merged set will no longer use the Argent name and will now be known as The Chambers of Anthony Metzer QC at Goldsmith Chambers (Metzer being the head of Argent). All 35 of Argent’s barristers, as well as its four pupils, have moved to Goldsmith’s offices in Temple.
Speaking to Legal Cheek, Argent’s senior clerk, Michael Martin, said that the move was necessitated by the legal aid cuts. Martin said: "We are very busy in terms of work volumes, but the reduction in fees from legal aid work has obviously hit all criminal sets. The issue is that the building we [were] in [was] too expensive. We should have got out of it two to three years ago."
