The London Borough of Hillingdon has appointed four school leavers as legal assistant apprentices in its legal services department. They will be trained jointly by ILEX Tutorial College and Vision Apprentices over a period of twelve months. At the same time, they will be employed by the council on a two-year contract. This scheme is thought to be the first in the United Kingdom to focus specifically on legal training for young people interested in a career in this field.
Muna Ahmed, one of those newly appointed as a legal apprentice, commented: "This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for me as I want to develop my skills in the workplace at the same time as studying. I’m really looking forward to getting some practical experience within the council, which will help me start my career in the legal industry."
In other apprenticeship news, Skills for Justice has announced the launch of the Higher Apprenticeship in Legal Services in Wales, which provides a new route into a career in law. This follows hot on from the general UK level 4 launch last week. Equivalent to the first year of a degree, this new employer-led qualification will result in at least 30 brand new apprentices being fully accredited in Wales in 2015.
