Applications now open for 19 Justice First Fellowships

updated on 18 August 2021

The Legal Education Foundation (TLEF) is offering 19 trainee solicitor posts at leading social justice organisations across the UK, as part of its early 2022 Justice First Fellowship (JFF) scheme.

This year there will be a single application phase with only training contracts being offered.

The scheme, which opened on Monday 16 August 2021, is suitable for aspiring lawyers who are passionate about pursuing a career that involves using the law as a tool for social justice.

The foundation has partnered up with a few firms, including Bhatt Murphy in prison law and Article 39 in the strategic litigation department, and Hopkin Murray Beskine, an established solicitors’ firm, in the housing/public law department.

This year’s scheme is in collaboration with 19 organisations:

  • Bhatt Murphy Solicitors (with Article 39);
  • Hopkin Murray Beskine;
  • Speakeasy Law Centre;
  • Suffolk Law Centre;
  • Tower Hamlets Law Centre;
  • Law Centre NI;
  • Luton Law Centre;
  • Just For Kids Law;
  • Bristol Law Centre;
  • Anti-Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit (ATLEU);
  • APPEAL;
  • Centre for Women’s Justice (CWJ);
  • Housing Rights;
  • Howard League for Penal Reform;
  • JustRight Scotland;

Matthew Smerdon, TLEF CEO said: “Since we launched the scheme, over 120 Fellowships have been funded. As a testament to the quality of Fellows and host organisations, 98% of graduated fellows are currently in paid employment with 91% working as lawyers using law for the public benefit to achieve a social good.”

Interested applicants, who must have passed the LPC by October 2021 and proved their commitment to social justice, need to submit their applications by midnight on Monday 13 September 2021.
