The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has appointed five new lay board members. This means that from January 2012, lay members will outnumber barrister members for the first time since the BSB’s inception in 2006.
The new board will include eight lay and seven barrister members. New members include qualified chartered accountant Tim Robinson, professor of criminal law and criminology at the University of Birmingham Andrew Sanders, and Dr Anne Wright CBE, who is the chair and commissioner of the National Lottery Commission.
Commenting on the appointments, BSB chair Baroness Deech said: "I am pleased that we have now ensured a lay majority for the board. These appointments reinforce our commitment to regulate barristers in the public interest and enhance our position as the specialist regulator of advocacy in England and Wales. The calibre of our new board members is outstanding and I welcome them all."
